Takashi Sorimachi: “I want three generations of families to watch together”

At the production press conference, Takashi Sorimachi shared his thoughts on reprising the role of Eikichi Onizuka. He said, “After the 2024 special GTO Revival aired, I realized the work itself was fantastic, but I thought if we made it into a series, we could present it in a different way.” He believes that as he is now, he can portray an “unchanging Onizuka” closer to the 1998 version.

Sorimachi also revealed that when GTO Revival aired, a friend sent him a photo of “three generations of a family sitting in front of the TV watching the show together,” which deeply moved him. He said, “In this day and age, I want to make families of three generations sit in front of the TV at 10 PM on Mondays again, looking forward to this show—this belief is the biggest motivation for us to produce this series.”

2026 Story Setting: The Digital Dilemma of Reiwa Education

The 2026 version of Great Teacher Onizuka brings Eikichi Onizuka into the modern “Reiwa” environment. The story is set at a high school called “Seishin Private Academy,” which operates under the philosophy of “cultivating future leaders.” Both teachers and students carry tablets, and everyone’s information and evaluations are managed through a digital system.

The most controversial mechanism is the so-called “Teacher Feedback System”: students can anonymously rate teachers, and if ratings remain low, the teacher is branded as an “unfit homeroom teacher.” The entire campus environment is highly efficient and rationalized; communication between teachers and students relies almost entirely on tablet chats, leaving little room for honest, face-to-face interaction. 52-year-old Eikichi Onizuka walks into the classroom in this environment to become a homeroom teacher.

The official synopsis describes the core theme of the story: “For the generation that grew up watching GTO, this is a story that re-examines contemporary society; for the younger generation encountering Eikichi Onizuka for the first time, this is a drama that pierces directly into your current struggles.” One of the themes of the work is “What is a Great Teacher?”—and the journey to find this answer will run through the entire series.

Original Cast & Crew Reunited! The 1998 Golden Production Team Returns

What excites many about Great Teacher Onizuka 2026 is not just the return of Takashi Sorimachi, but the reunion of almost the entire original production team. The screenplay is written by Kazuhiko Yukawa, the same writer as the 1998 original. The direction is led by Satoru Nakajima (alongside new director Kento Matsuda), who was also the chief director of the 1998 version. Executive producer Kazuhisa Ando, who created the social phenomenon 28 years ago, is also at the helm.

The production team also pointed out that the 2026 version will inherit the worldview and character personality of Eikichi Onizuka established in the 1998 version, while incorporating new elements of the Reiwa era, starting as a brand-new, complete drama series—rather than just a nostalgic remake or a sequel. Original author Toru Fujisawa also left a comment: “With the drama returning after 28 years, I am looking forward to seeing how this Showa-era former biker teacher will solve the problems of Reiwa students.”

The 1998 Social Phenomenon: 28.5% Average Rating, 35.7% Finale

For many viewers in Taiwan and Japan, Great Teacher Onizuka is an unforgettable memory of their youth. In the summer of 1998, this school drama featuring Eikichi Onizuka, a former biker-turned-teacher, exploded with popularity across Japan due to its large-scale location shooting, unexpected plot developments, and an “unconventional” style that subverted traditional teacher-student dynamics.

The 12-episode series achieved an average rating of 28.5% (Kanto region), with the finale reaching 35.7% (Video Research survey), making it one of the most representative school dramas of the Heisei era and a landmark in 1990s Japanese television. In Taiwan, broadcasts on channels like Videoland Japan allowed Great Teacher Onizuka to reach every household, and the on-screen couple image of Takashi Sorimachi and Nanako Matsushima (who played teacher Azusa Fuyutsuki) left a deep impression on Taiwanese viewers.

In just one episode, it recorded 4.3 million views on the Japanese streaming platform TVer, becoming the highest-viewed special drama in the platform’s history since its official launch.

In Taiwan, friDay Video acquired exclusive streaming rights. Less than 5 days after GTO Revival was released, it surpassed the previous year’s hit drama Paripi Koumei, reaching the highest number of viewers in the first week of a Japanese drama on the platform. The reaction from Taiwanese fans was even more enthusiastic, with cries of “One episode is not enough!” spreading explosively on social media, becoming one of the hottest topics in the Taiwanese Japanese drama community at the time.

It was this craze that made Kansai TV and Takashi Sorimachi determined: a series must be made.

GTO Revival Theme Song New Version of POISON: Blue Encount × Takashi Sorimachi

In addition to the plot, the theme song arrangement for GTO Revival was a huge surprise for fans. The official team collaborated with Japanese rock band Blue Encount and Takashi Sorimachi himself to re-record the legendary theme song “POISON ~Itai koto mo ienai konna yononaka wa~,” reinterpreting the soul of the song with a rock version. This collaboration version received an explosive positive reaction online, allowing many in the younger generation to experience the charm of this song for the first time.

Takashi Sorimachi’s Connection to Taiwan: “As long as you invite me, I’ll fly over!”

Takashi Sorimachi has a deep connection with Taiwan. After GTO Revival aired, he mentioned in an interview with Taiwanese media: “I vaguely remember holding a concert at the Zhongshan Soccer Stadium and participating in fashion events. Taiwanese audiences have been very kind to me, which left a deep impression.” He clearly stated that he wants to visit Taiwan again, saying firmly: “As long as everyone is willing to invite me, I will definitely fly over!

Editor’s View: Onizuka after 28 years is needed more than ever

I have always felt that the reason Great Teacher Onizuka is still exciting after 28 years is not just because of nostalgia, but because its core questions have never truly been solved—”What is a real teacher? What is good for students?” This question had an answer in 1998, and it needs an answer even more in 2026.

The 2026 version putting Onizuka into a digital school where “even teachers are rated by students” is the perfect setting. In an era where we are all rated by algorithms, managed by KPIs, and even teacher-student relationships rely on tablet chats, a teacher who will rush into a classroom, carry a student on his shoulders, and break the rules to save a student is the most precious existence.

This series has the scriptwriting team from 28 years ago, the life depth of 52-year-old Takashi Sorimachi, and the reality of the Reiwa era—with these three conditions combined, the potential of this drama cannot be underestimated. Looking forward to July 20, and hoping that Taiwan can acquire the broadcast rights as soon as possible, so that Taiwanese audiences can feel Onizuka’s passion in sync with Japan.

★★★★☆ Expectation: 4.5/5
