A brand new Resident Evil live-action movie is coming! Columbia Pictures, under Sony Pictures, has announced that the new reboot, directed by Zach Cregger (director of Weapons and Barbarian), will be released in theaters worldwide on September 18, 2026. The film will be available in PLF (Premium Large Format) and IMAX for an ultimate immersive horror experience.
The film was first revealed at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas in April 2026, where Sony Pictures screened an exclusive trailer that garnered significant media attention. This marks the franchise’s latest big-screen endeavor since 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

The story begins on a seemingly ordinary night. The protagonist, Bryan (played by Austin Abrams), is an organ transporter tasked with delivering a vital organ to a remote hospital on a cold, snowy night. Along the way, he encounters a mysterious woman on a desolate highway, setting the wheels of fate in motion.
Bryan is soon thrust into an unimaginable biological disaster, forced into a desperate race for survival against the undead, tentacled monstrosities, and various brutal bio-organic weapons. The trailer showcases Bryan navigating abandoned buildings and dark sewers, with glimpses of giant creatures lurking in the shadows—a journey from reality into hell that left CinemaCon attendees breathless.

Zach Cregger has become one of Hollywood’s most watched horror directors. He rose to fame with the 2022 sleeper hit Barbarian, followed by the highly acclaimed Weapons in 2025. Both films are known for their meticulous suspense and unpredictable plot twists.
However, for Resident Evil, Cregger is taking a different narrative approach. At CinemaCon, he stated: “This movie has no complex time jumps or narrative gimmicks.” Audiences will follow Bryan’s journey through this apocalyptic world from start to finish—a relentless, pedal-to-the-metal survival horror experience.
Cregger admitted to spending decades playing the Resident Evil games, fascinated by their cinematic atmosphere, pacing, resource management, and creeping dread. He aims to create an experience faithful to the spirit of the original games, declaring: “I don’t intend to strictly follow the game’s lore structure, but I strive to make the core feeling of the movie faithfully represent the reality you feel when playing the game.”

The protagonist Bryan is played by Austin Abrams. Following his acclaimed performance in Weapons, Abrams reunites with Cregger for this lead role. He portrays an ordinary man thrown into an extraordinary life-or-death situation, requiring a performance that spans from sheer terror to a fierce will to survive.
The supporting cast is equally impressive:
Paul Walter Hauser: Known for his roles in Black Bird and I, Tonya, Hauser joins the cast in a key role that has fans highly anticipating his performance.
Zach Cherry: The comedic actor from Silicon Valley and Black Mirror appears in a different light for this project.
Kali Reis: The former world champion boxer who broke out in True Detective Season 4 brings her intense screen presence to the Resident Evil universe.
The exclusive trailer shown at CinemaCon 2026 quickly became a hot topic. According to media reports, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, with viewers describing the film as “fast-paced, with excellent effects, unlike a typical game adaptation,” even comparing it to a “horror version of Mad Max: Fury Road.”
The trailer opens with Bryan entering an abandoned house in the snow, leaving a voicemail for his girlfriend with a calm but desperate tone: “Something happened, we might not get a chance to talk again.” It then cuts to intense sequences of running through abandoned streets, zombies lurking on rooftops, and a terrifying encounter with a bloated creature in the sewers.
One media outlet noted: “This isn’t just another game adaptation; it’s a highly refined product full of creative confidence.” The film runs approximately 90 minutes with a relentless pace.
The film is co-produced by Constantin Film (rights holders of the Resident Evil film franchise) and Vertigo Entertainment (producers of IT), in association with Sony’s PlayStation Productions—indicating Capcom’s involvement in the production ecosystem. The script was co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapters 3 & 4).
The production team includes Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee (The Grudge), Miri Yoon, Carter Swan, and Asad Qizilbash. Principal photography began in October 2025 in Prague, Czech Republic. The city’s winter streets and icy atmosphere perfectly complement the film’s cold, horrific setting.
Since Capcom released the first game in 1996, Resident Evil has been synonymous with survival horror. The film history is equally storied:
In 2002, the first Resident Evil film starring Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson was released, launching a 14-year franchise. The series spanned six films and grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful video game adaptations in history.
In 2021, the reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, attempted to return to the games’ dark, realistic roots but saw limited box office success. For 2026, Sony Pictures is determined to reboot again with a new team, promising a film that truly captures the “essence of survival horror.”

In the same year as the movie announcement, Capcom’s game series is at an all-time high. Resident Evil 9: Requiem launched on February 27, 2026, selling over 6 million copies in just a few months, becoming the fastest-selling entry in the franchise’s history.

RE9 features dual protagonists—FBI analyst Grace and agent Leon S. Kennedy—returning to the source of the biohazard in Raccoon City, featuring terrifying explorations of abandoned hospitals and urban ruins. The game also won five nominations at gamescom 2025, including “Best Visuals” and “Most Epic.”

Capcom has confirmed upcoming DLC and 30th-anniversary celebrations, keeping the brand momentum strong. Sony’s choice to release the live-action film in Fall 2026 is perfectly timed to capitalize on this success.

The Resident Evil live-action movie is set for a global theatrical release on September 18, 2026. It will be available in standard, PLF, and IMAX formats. Horror fans are encouraged to book IMAX screenings for the most immersive experience.
The official trailer is expected to be released soon via Sony Pictures’ official channels. For the latest updates, fans can subscribe at the official website (residentevil-movie.com).
