Sixth Expansion “Evercold” Officially Revealed

SQUARE ENIX has officially announced that the sixth expansion for Final Fantasy XIV is titled “EVERCOLD,” scheduled for release in January 2027. Supported platforms include PC, PS5, PS4, Mac, Xbox Series X|S, and the newly added Nintendo Switch 2.

This expansion marks the beginning of the second chapter of the main scenario legend, the “Godless World Saga.” The story is set in the Fourth Mirror World, a realm being consumed by the power of ice. The level cap will be raised from 95 to 110, ushering in a brand-new adventure.

The Frozen Mystery of the Fourth World — Main Scenario Chapter 2

Naoki Yoshida stated that compared to the previous expansion, “Dawntrail,” which felt like a “summer vacation” for the Warrior of Light, the new chapter “Evercold” will present a starkly different and severe challenge. The Fourth World, eroded by ice, is home to mysterious creatures whose intentions remain unknown.

The prologue to this story has already begun with the Patch 7.5 Main Scenario Quests released today (April 28). Players can jump in now to experience the initial setup and prepare for the journey into “Evercold.”

Additionally, a new feline race (distinct from the existing Miqo’te) will debut in the expansion. Currently, they are confirmed as a “friendly (?)” race, with detailed appearances and lore to be revealed later.

Season System Overhaul: Moving Beyond Daily Chores

Patch 8.0 brings a fundamental revolution to game design, aiming to free players from the burden of “daily mandatory tasks.” Key changes include:

Introduction of the Season System: Yoshida emphasized that this is not a paid “Season Pass,” nor does it mean the game is going free-to-play. Simply put, the update cycles previously referred to by patch numbers will now be called “Seasons.” An even-numbered patch (major gear upgrades) combined with the subsequent odd-numbered patch will constitute “one season,” making it easier for players to track character progression.

Adventurer Activity System: A new unified management interface that integrates character growth, gear management, raid progress, and weekly milestones. Players can freely choose content they enjoy to accumulate “Activity Points.” Reaching point milestones rewards players with gear and other items. Most importantly, if you miss a weekly cap, you can catch up the following week—a perfect feature for busy players!

Armoury System Evolution: The core feature of “one character, all jobs” remains, but in the future, players can sync the stats of their highest-level job directly to other jobs, significantly reducing the gear grind for multi-job players. The gear progression path will also be adjusted to give character growth during odd-numbered patches a greater sense of purpose.

Reborn Mode vs. Evolve Mode — A Revolutionary New Job Skill System

The most talked-about feature for veteran players in Patch 8.0 is the new job skill concept: Reborn Mode and Evolve Mode.

“Reborn Mode” is the existing skill system, allowing current players to continue using their familiar playstyles. “Evolve Mode” features a completely different skill rotation with fewer buttons and lower complexity—but note that this is not a “Simple Mode.” Evolve Mode has its own dedicated skill system, essentially creating a different playstyle within the same job framework. The developers even mentioned that Evolve Mode might be slightly more powerful than Reborn Mode, positioning it as a choice for different playstyle preferences rather than a difficulty setting.

Patch 8.0 also confirms the addition of two new jobs: a Tank and a Physical Ranged DPS, both original to FFXIV. The Tank job will be officially revealed at the European Fan Fest. Blue Mage and Beastmaster will not support Evolve Mode, and jobs added after Patch 8.0 will only offer Evolve Mode versions.

Neon Genesis Evangelion × FFXIV 24-Man Alliance Raid Confirmed!

One of the biggest surprises of this Fan Festival was the official crossover between FFXIV and Neon Genesis Evangelion! The collaboration will feature a 24-man Alliance Raid during the Patch 8.x cycle, titled “FINAL FANTASY XIV: EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire.”

The collaboration is fully supervised by Studio khara, founded by Hideaki Anno, ensuring that the characters and world of EVA are presented faithfully. For fans of both FFXIV and EVA, this is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated updates.
