After waiting for over five years, the latest film in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising, has finally been fully revealed. The official team released the 3rd trailer today (April 30) and announced that the two new characters, “Lilac” and “Selma Therese,” will be voiced by Shion Wakayama and Tomoyo Kurosawa, respectively, thrilling long-awaiting fans. The film is scheduled for a Japanese release on August 28, and the distributor Muse has confirmed it will hit Taiwan theaters on September 4, marking 13 years since 2013’s Rebellion.

To understand the significance of Walpurgisnacht Rising, one must look back at the 2013 film Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie [New] Rebellion. In that work, Homura Akemi defied the “laws” to protect Madoka Kaname, using power bordering on that of a demon to strip away Madoka’s divinity and forcibly construct a world based on the premise of “keeping Madoka by her side forever.” The story ended with Homura gazing into the distance, her eyes filled with contradiction and determination, leaving behind countless mysteries and debates.
Walpurgisnacht Rising is the official sequel to this story, picking up in the new world created by Homura, exploring the fate between the “imprisoned goddess” and the “demonic guardian”—and where that unspoken “love” will ultimately lead.

On April 30, the official team released the 3rd promotional video for Walpurgisnacht Rising. This 30-second trailer features a wealth of new footage—mysterious spaces, glimpses of multiple magical girls, and breathtaking visuals. Most importantly, the official team announced the voice actors for the two newly introduced characters, completing the film’s cast lineup.

Voiced by the renowned Shion Wakayama, known for her roles as Suletta Mercury in The Witch from Mercury and Mitsuri Kanroji in Demon Slayer. Lilac appears mysteriously in the trailer, with a design that incorporates elements from the original five protagonists, sparking intense fan discussion—what exactly does she represent?
Voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa, who played Shinobu Kocho in Demon Slayer and Dola in Attack on Titan, she is one of the most prominent voice actors in the Japanese anime industry today. Selma Therese appears to have an orange color scheme and is seen interacting with Kyubey in several shots, displaying a mysterious charm distinct from the main characters.

The most reassuring news about this film is that the entire original voice cast is returning:
| Character | Voice Actor | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Madoka Kaname | Aoi Yuki | Protagonist returns |
| Homura Akemi | Chiwa Saito | Protagonist returns |
| Mami Tomoe | Kaori Mizuhashi | Protagonist returns |

| Nagisa Momoe | Kana Asumi | Returns |
| Kyubey | Emiri Kato | Returns |
| Lilac (New) | Shion Wakayama | ★New Character |

One of the most exciting aspects of Walpurgisnacht Rising is that the original core production team has fully returned. Notably, screenwriter Gen Urobuchi revealed that the script for this work was completed between 2014 and 2016—just after he finished working on Kamen Rider Gaim, and it was “the last script where I could still write lines for cute girls on my own.”

The Puella Magi Madoka Magica series holds a special place in the hearts of anime fans in Taiwan. The seemingly ordinary magical girl anime from 2011 subverted the entire genre with Gen Urobuchi’s tragic writing. Rebellion shocked everyone with its controversial ending—13 years later, people are still debating whether Homura’s motives were love or selfishness. And Walpurgisnacht Rising is about to provide the answer.
Judging from today’s 3rd trailer, the visual quality of this work is still at the peak of SHAFT’s capabilities—the surreal space design by Gekidan Inu Curry brings unique geometric shapes and a sense of surrealism, combined with the return of Yuki Kajiura’s music. Just imagining the oppressive melody of “Nux Walpurgis” playing on the big screen in a theater is breathtaking. The addition of Shion Wakayama and Tomoyo Kurosawa makes the voice cast nearly perfect.
If you are a long-time fan of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, please mark September 4 on your calendar. If you haven’t seen the original work yet, there is still time—watch the 12-episode TV anime, then watch Rebellion, and then walk into the theater with all your questions.
